This may sound contradictory but: David writes with a beautiful, opinionated objectivity. He distills the pre-war accomplishments and connections of the elitist leftovers from the Kennedy administration with a remarkable deftness. He even flashes a rapier wit now and then.
Linguistically, Lyndon is the class clown, and David does well to step aside and let him speak his riotous argot for himself--talk about your potty-mouthed mover and shaker!
I love that Mr. Halberstam fearlessly calls a spade a spade, i.e. a moron a moron, no matter their stellar accomplishments or superhuman work ethic. The brothers Bundy are well revealed herein; as is the "MacBeth" of the Vietnam war: Robert McNamara.
David unspins the mountains of governmental hooey into fine threads of truth that he reweaves into a tale of unparalled hubris.
If you need to see how disconnected, how Strangelovian our military was, how absurdist the upper echelons of government were; from Dwight D. on--read this book.
It proves that for decades the lunatics were indeed in charge of that asylum called South Vietnam; they also ran the Pentagon, the Whitehouse and, very very much, the Department of State.
Step right up, folks! Buy this book! Read in awe as Mr. Dean Rusk does his uncanny impersonation of the Exxon Valdez.

is this history or self-justification?

I wasn't a great fan of Mr. Halberstam's reporting from Vietnam. It seemed to be at the time to be more than a little biased. Perhaps that put the idea into my head, but when I read this book it seemed in part to be an effort to justify the anti-war bias that marred his work as a reporter--a retroactive proof of his own superior judgment--rather than groundbreaking history

My favorite review of this book was by Mary McCarthy, a novelist who had visited both halves of the geopolitically split country now universally known as Vietnam, when American policy was a major reason for considering that country split in two. American interest in the story which Halberstam tells in this book will always be greater than anything that Mary McCarthy might tell us about what any of the Vietnamese thought. For me this book was my first glimpse at the explicit nature of the thinking at the top, which definitely trickled down to the Americans out in the field in Vietnam, though none of them may have used it in the presence of a great American novelist like Mary McCarthy, who possessed an elite, upper-crust quality which made her defense of her own thinking on the topic as easy to dismiss as the superfluous usually are. Like a perverse philosopher viewing the comedy of mayhem, she would like to know "to what end all these excited words were assembled, . . . studded, like a ham, with anecdotes and gossip about historic decisions and high-status personalities, syrupy with compassionate insights into the gamesmanship of power?" That would be like asking why I review books, and particularly, this one.

Excellent Book on American policy making in Vietnam

This is a truly excellent book on American policy making in Vietnam.
I first read it in 1973 or 1974. It blew my mind that 'the best and the brightest' could act as they did, whether from honest but gross misjudgement to outright lies, often mixed with incredible arrogance.
Some of the material is found in the Pentagon Papers, the Defense Department's own study of the war. Another reviewer commented that they had not yet been made published, but Halberstam apparently had access to them.
This book provided another (and large) nail in the coffin of my naive idealism of someone growing up in post WWII America (college, class of 1966) with respect to the US government.
I was totally absorbed when reading it. Halberstam does occasionally overuse some of his pet phrasings,e.g. 'rare ability'.

Unter Federführung von David Halberstam, der für seine kritischen Reportagen aus dem Vietnamkrieg mit dem Pulitzerpreis ausgezeichnet wurde, schrieben 35 führende amerikanische Intellektuelle -- darunter Historiker, Soziologen, Journalisten -- ihre Gedanken zur Entwicklung der USA nieder.
Unterteilt in sechs Kapitel, die sich mit verschiedenen Zeiträumen beschäftigen, gehen die Autoren in ihren ebenso spannend wie informativ geschriebenen Essays auf die Suche nach den Wurzeln ihres Landes. Und landen doch immer wieder beim Thema Einwanderung, ihren eigenen großväterlichen Wurzeln und so bei ihrem eigenen Werdegang. Und da der ja recht erfolgreich war -- sonst wären sie nämlich nicht Autoren dieses Buches -- kann auch leicht der Eindruck entstehen, das Klischee des amerikanischen Traums vom Tellerwäscher zum Millionär wäre zwischen New York und L.A. der Standard. Doch jenseits der eigenen Dankbarkeit und des Ich-Erzählstils warten auch viele objektive Beobachtungen. Halberstam berichtet etwa über die Bürgerrechtsbewegung, über schwarze Studenten, die darum kämpften, nicht diskriminiert zu werden, und dabei ihr Leben aufs Spiel setzten und so zu Helden der amerikanischen Zeitgeschichte wurden. Wie brutal die Einwanderer gegenüber den Indianern gegenüber waren, wird hingegen kaum erwähnt. Dafür analysieren andere Autoren den Aufstieg eines gewissen Henry Ford, den zögerlichen Eintritt in die beiden Weltkriege, die Entstehung der suburbs, der amerikanischen Literatur und Musik sowie das besondere Lebensgefühl in Kalifornien.
Fazit: Die facettenreichen Berichte erschließen dem Leser faszinierende Zusammenhänge zwischen historischen Ereignissen und geographischen Gegebenheiten. Und sie machen auch verständlich, wie nachhaltig das -- vormals durch nichts irritierbare -- Gefühl der Sicherheit der Nation durch den 11. September 2001 erschüttert wurde. Die USA ist aber nicht nur auf Grund ihrer schieren Größe atemberaubend und einzigartig, es sind natürlich auch die Menschen, ihr "American Way of Life", die dieses Land prägen. Das reich bebilderte Sachbuch "Defining America" spannt nun einen weiten Bogen von der Historie bis zur Gegenwart, von der Kultur bis zur Wirtschaft, um einen Eindruck vom Charakter dieser Nation zu vermitteln. Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens erzählen dazu von ihrem ganz individuellen amerikanischen Traum. Gerade in der heutigen Zeit, die vom Misstrauen, vom Terror und vom Alleingang der amerikanischen Führung in Fragen des internationalen Dialogs geprägt ist, ist es von entscheidender Bedeutung, Amerika losgelöst von der schnelllebigen Tagespolitik zu betrachten.
Wie ein Mosaik setzen sich so auch die vielen Bilder und Illustrationen zusammen. Sie sind so vielfältig wie die Zeit aus der sie kommen und das Land selbst. Einige von ihnen haben sich in das kollektive Gedächtnis der Welt eingebrannt, wie zum Beispiel die offenen Militärhubschrauber vor Vietnams Dschungelkulisse oder die Fallschirmjäger in Little Rock, die 1957 schwarzen Schülern zu ihren Rechten verhalfen. Andere dagegen, und das ist die Mehrzahl, zeigen einen intimen Blick auf das Alltagsleben: Straßenkreuzer auf den Highways, Autokino, Vorstadtsiedlungen oder Familienleben am Pool in den 1950ern. Teilweise sind sie in Farbe, andere spiegeln in ihrer schwarz-weißen Ästhetik jedoch das Lebensgefühl in der ersten Hälfte des letzten Jahrhunderts wieder.
Herausgeber David Halberstam hat mit diesem Buch ein großartiges Stück Zeitgeschichte entstehen lassen!

Passionate Rivalry in Baseball's Golden Age

The author gives you a great insight into the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry as played out in 1949, and does a remarkable job of making you feel like you are in the stands watching these 2 terrific teams do battle. I read most of this book on the beaches of Cape Cod, and it felt like I had the game on the radio and I was transported to baseball's golden age. I particularly enjoyed the inside stuff on Joe DiMaggio (even though I'm a Red Sox fan!)

Early days of the "Curse of the Babe"

The details of the games that kept the race tight right up until the seasons end were not as interesting as the behind the scenes commentary. This was baseball taking baby steps across the color barrier. This was baseball in an era when many of the greats were beginning to fade and the next generation of phemons were just arriving. Baseball in the throes of a painful but game saving transition. Halbertstam is especially good at focusing on some long forgotten players such as Ellis Kinder of the Red Sox.
Although this book is devoid of the intracacies of the game, it is rich in lore and should elighten both the uninitiated and the baseball afficianado.

A Baseball Epic!

The great David Halberstam uses his intellect and flare for a story to write a unique baseball book. He treats the Yankees vs. the Red Sox with all of the respect and awe of the most encyclopeadic account of World War II. Best of all, it is not a typical baseball book, focusing on ERA's, RBI's, numbers, statistics, etc... This is a book about the men who played the game, who lived the game, whose lives were forever intertwined in America's past time. One confuses Joe DiMaggio with Achilles after putting down the Summer of '49.
As a baseball historian, only Roger Kahn matches the greatness of Halberstam.

Some baseball seasons are more important than others- the 1941 season saw the twin feats of Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak and Ted Williams .406 batting average, the 1951 season saw the incredible comeback of the New York Giants and Robby Thomson's miracle home run, and the 1964 season saw the final decline and fall of the New York Yankees.
The 1949 season is a special one for baseball as well. The New York Yankees, poised to begin their glory years, would square off with a talented Boston Red Sox team and defeat it in dramatic style thanks to the heroics of an injured Joe DiMaggio.
Summer of '49 is David Halberstam's story of that astounding season. More than a simple account of the season's wins and losses, Halberstam delves deep into the background of the players and coaches. The picture that comes into focus is a fascinating look at the way baseball was played in the 1940s and 50s, when players (many of whom had grown up on small farms in the Great Depression) fought hard to win and played every day as if it were their last. While not quite as interesting as his "October 1964", Halberstam has nevertheless written a wonderfully exciting account of what baseball was like over a half century ago.
This is a book that will make any baseball enthusiast smile.
